Trinity Yard School was fortunate enough this week to have Jeff and Tini of Project Peanut Butter present their project. They were here in Cape Three Points on vacation from Kumasi, where they are working on Project Peanut Butter. Project Peanut Butter is an organization aimed at eradicating malnutrition in Africa. Malnutrition is a critical, global problem that impacts millions of vulnerable children each year. It is the largest killer of children under five, contributing to nearly half of all childhood deaths. In Ghana, an estimated 30,000 children under five suffer from acute malnutrition annually.
Project Peanut Butter has created a formula consisting of ground peanut paste, powdered milk, vegetable oil, and sugar as well as vitamins and minerals. This formula has a 90% success rate in combating malnutrition in children under five.
Jeff and Tini have been hired to prepare the new Ghanian factory for full-fledged production. This means they are busy registering the factory locally to produce food, securing utilities, and setting up a quality control system to ensure the food will be safe for malnourished children to consume.
Jeff, a registered nurse, taught the students about disease prevention and safety. Tini, a librarian and teacher, answered the student’s many questions about Project Peanut Butter and how it worked. We discussed nutrition, health and safety, and looked at percentages when discussing malnutrition in Ghana. In the words of one student: “it was amazing!”
