Volunteer Testimonials

Christo Gilbert

I volunteered at TYS for ten months, teaching science, agricultural and art. The local community here is very welcoming; it never ceased to amaze me, the generosity and friendship offered. Ghanaians are beautiful people who know how to enjoy life and laugh! The surrounding area is a mixture of forest and farm land meeting the white sand tropical beaches. You’ll be living a stone throw away from a beautiful beach. If you want to embark on a purposeful adventure set in a beautiful location then this is the place! I made lifelong friends, learned about new cultures and languages, and got to see firsthand the impact an education has on a person’s life and community. Volunteering here comes highly recommended from me.

I arrived at TYS in February 2019, volunteering for almost six months. I taught English and Geography to teenagers and to young children from the local primary school. From the moment I arrived I knew I would love it. The location and the sense of community is overwhelming. The work done with people of all ages is amazing! TYS has such a positive impact on the people from the surrounding communities. The students’ enthusiasm, positivity and desire to never give up is contagious. I would recommend this school to anyone – I’m sure to be back in some stage in the future myself. What a great experience it was!

The Trinity Yard School is unique both as an institution and an experience. I worked at TYS for over a year as a lead teacher with a group of truly amazing, dedicated, and incredibly hardworking individuals – both Ghanaian and American. My time at TYS was challenging at times, but ultimately left me with a much better understanding of the Ghanaian people and my own place in a world ripe with opportunity and diversity. The set of skills I gained have impacted almost every aspect of my life – personal, professional, and spiritual.

The beauty surrounding TYS would be enough alone to make my experience wonderful, but the respectfulness and motivation of the students and the joy of teaching with dedicated professionals made it truly awesome! I’m proud to have played a part in the heroic purpose of Trinity Yard School and glad for the opportunity to witness this mingling of cultures. It’s inspiring to work for an organization bettering the lives of young people by providing opportunities to continue their education and training.

During my stay at Trinity Yard School, I found it to be a haven and a challenge for its students. It provides a safe, supportive environment while providing a much-needed opportunity for these young adults to prepare for their future working life. The staff at the school is skilled, compassionate, and dedicated. The staff was always helpful, and they made my stay at the school one of my most rewarding experiences.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to live and teach at TYS. Never again will I be so lucky to work with students with such a thirst for knowledge and a desire to develop their skills. Top this off with the most beautiful seaside location in Ghana and a handful of like-minded volunteers, teachers and staff, and it was an experience which was rewarding in so many ways.
